NDIS Supported Accommodation: A Guide to STA, SDA, and SIL
Navigating the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding the different types of supported accommodation available. Whether you're looking for short-term solutions or long-term living arrangements, the NDIS offers a variety of options to suit your needs.
Karista has put together a quick guide to help you understand Short Term Accommodation (STA), Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA), and Supported Independent Living (SIL), and how they can support your journey towards greater independence.
What is Short Term Accommodation (STA)?
Short Term Accommodation (STA), often referred to as respite care, provides temporary housing and support for individuals with disabilities. It is designed to give participants a break from their usual routine or provide a safe and supportive environment while caregivers take time off.
STA can be utilised for various reasons, such as giving family members a break, transitioning to new living arrangements, or simply experiencing new environments and activities. This type of accommodation typically includes assistance with daily living activities, meals, and access to social and recreational activities. Read more about Respite here
What is Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA)?
Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) is a specialised housing solution designed for NDIS participants with high support needs or extreme functional impairments. SDA homes are built to cater to a range of accessibility requirements, offering features like wider doorways, wheelchair ramps, modified bathrooms, and assistive technology.
The goal of SDA is to provide a safe and supportive living environment that maximises independence and quality of life. These accommodations are tailored to individual needs, ensuring that participants receive the specific support and services they require.
What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?
Supported Independent Living (SIL) refers to a range of support services provided in a shared living arrangement. SIL is ideal for individuals who can live independently but require some assistance with daily tasks, such as cooking, cleaning, personal care, and medication management.
SIL supports are typically provided in a group home setting, where participants share common areas but have their own private spaces. The level of support can vary, from 24/7 assistance to a few hours per day, depending on the individual's needs and preferences. The aim of SIL is to empower participants to develop life skills and achieve greater independence.
How can these types of accommodation help someone with a disability?
Each type of supported accommodation under the NDIS serves a unique purpose and offers distinct benefits:
STA: Provides short-term relief for both participants and caregivers, offering a change of scenery and opportunities to engage in new activities.
SDA: Ensures that individuals with complex needs have access to safe, accessible, and purpose-built housing that supports their daily living and health requirements.
SIL: Encourages independence by offering tailored support in a shared environment, helping participants develop essential life skills and build confidence.
These accommodations not only provide practical support but also contribute to the emotional and social well-being of individuals with disabilities, enabling them to lead fulfilling and empowered lives.
How can I tell if I am covered for supported accommodation in my NDIS Plan?
To determine if you are eligible for STA, SDA, or SIL check your NDIS plan for specific funding allocations for accommodation supports. Look for categories like "Core Supports," "Capacity Building Supports," or "Capital Supports."
Your eligibility for SDA, SIL, or STA may depend on your level of disability, required support, and long-term objectives. Your plan may need to be reviewed and adjusted to include these supports.
In some cases, you may need a specialist assessment to determine your eligibility for SDA or SIL. This assessment will evaluate your functional capacity and support requirements.

I went onto the website and put in my information, within two minutes I had a phone call. I spoke to Ellen who was absolutely lovely and did a fantastic job explaining everything I needed to know and making me feel calm in a situation I've never had to navigate before. Definitely recommend this company (and the happy Ellen) to any parent/person who's looking for help in a plan manager.
