Printable Social Story - Helping children learn about winning and losing

Occupational therapy, or OT, is about finding practical ways to make everyday living easier. It’s not about pushing someone into a one-size-fits-all program; it’s about looking at the actual challenges someone has and figuring out solutions that work for them.
To some participants, this might include:
Under the NDIS, occupational therapy is recognised as both a therapeutic and functional support. That means it covers two key areas: helping with skill development and independence, and reducing barriers caused by disability.
For some participants, that might mean ongoing therapy, while for others, it might be short bursts of support to set up systems or equipment that make a long-term difference.
You will have improved daily living listed as a part of your Capacity Building budget, this depends on your goals and how your plan is set up.
Some participants also receive funding for OT assessments and functional capacity assessments specifically. These can be important for things like assessments and plans to acheive goals, home modifications, vehicle modifications, or equipment prescriptions. The key here is making sure your NDIS plan reflects what you actually want to achieve, because OT should be tied back to your goals.
A Functional Capacity Assessment can be completed by an Occupational Therapist. It assesses how well a person is able to do their every day tasks in their home and in their community. The OT is then able to recommend the amount of support that a client would require in order to improve their outcomes and meet their goals.
Working with Karista means you’re not just handed a list of occupational therapists and instructed to figure it out. Our team takes the time to match you with occupational therapists who understand your situation and can deliver the kind of support you’ll actually use.
Here are some of the benefits our participants often talk about:
Achieve Practical Results
OTs combine the best of both worlds: theory and practice. They step into your everyday environment and show you strategies that facilitate your recovery.
Gain Independence
The goal of occupational therapy isn’t to make you rely on additional services, but to undertake tasks on your own.
Experience Customisable Support
From paediatric OTs for children to therapists who specialise in complex physical needs, we connect you with the right person.
A Collaborative Experience
The OTs we can connect you to often work hand-in-hand with physiotherapists, speech pathologists and support workers, making sure everyone’s on the same page across a multi-disciplinary team.
When you use Karista, you gain a reliable platform that makes connecting with an NDIS-supported OT simple, safe, and stress-free.
Karista partners with an ever-growing network of NDIS-registered occupational therapists nationwide. That means whether you’re in a metro or regional area, we can match you with someone local or, if need be, set up telehealth sessions.
Likewise, our dedicated team not only helps connect with the provider of your choice, but we can also facilitate the necessary introductions and paperwork. This means you can spend less time on administrative tasks and more time on recovery.
How do I choose the right occupational therapist?
Start by looking for an OT who has experience with your age group and type of disability. A paediatric OT, for example, is very different from someone who specialises in adult rehabilitation. At Karista, we’ll guide you through those choices and line up options that fit your situation.
Can I find a paediatric occupational therapist through Karista?
Yes, at Karista, we work with a multitude of OTs, including those who focus specifically on children. Parents often find that having the right OT early makes a huge difference to a child’s confidence and development.
Does Karista provide occupational therapy directly?
No. We do not directly employ OTs. Instead, our platform is designed to connect you with qualified, NDIS-registered occupational therapists. Our team also helps in managing the service side of things. That way, you still have a choice and control, all without the added anxiety of having the navigate the system alone.
Will I still have choice and control?
Of course, under the NDIS, participants have the final say in deciding which providers they use. Karista simply facilitates this process by giving you direct access to a catalogue of occupational therapists who are already vetted and equipped to meet your needs. Ultimately, you’ll decide who you want to work with, how often, and in what format.
Karista provides a free, independent service connecting you with disability and home care services, therapists and support workers based on your personal needs and goals. Our Client Services team are experienced in finding and connecting NDIS and Aged Care (HCP & SAH) participants to supports with availability.
