Why the NDIS covers Psychologists — and how Psychology support can help you

Why the NDIS covers Psychologists — and how Psychology support can help you

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) recognises that mental health is just as important as physical health. For participants living with a disability, emotional wellbeing can significantly impact independence and daily life. That’s why psychology support is available under the NDIS — when it’s linked to your disability and helps you achieve your goals.

What does an NDIS Psychologist do?

An NDIS Psychologist works with you to understand your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours, and provides practical tools to improve your daily functioning. Their support is focused on building skills and capacity, not clinical treatment.

A Psychologist can help you:

  • Manage anxiety, stress, or emotional regulation related to your disability
  • Develop coping strategies and problem-solving skills
  • Improve communication and relationships
  • Build confidence and independence
  • Create positive routines and healthy habits

Why is Psychology support important?

Psychology support can make a real difference in everyday life. It can help you:

  • Feel calmer and more in control
  • Strengthen emotional resilience
  • Build stronger relationships
  • Increase independence and community participation
  • Improve overall quality of life

What the NDIS will and won’t fund

The NDIS funds psychology when it helps you build skills and independence linked to your disability. It does not cover:

  • Clinical mental health treatment (diagnosis, medication, trauma therapy)
  • Crisis support or hospital-based care
  • Services unrelated to your disability

How to access a Psychologist through the NDIS

If your plan includes Capacity Building – Improved Daily Living, you can use this funding for psychology services. To keep Psychology in your plan, make sure:

  • Your goals clearly link to functional improvements
  • Your Psychologist provides reports using NDIS language and measurable outcomes

You can choose an NDIS-registered Psychologist or a provider who understands your goals and preferences.
