What is a Psychosocial Recovery Coach?

A recovery coach is an NDIS funded worker that has mental health knowledge. A recovery coach will:

  • Spend time with you and those important to you to understand your needs and goals.
  • Assist you in exploring various services and supports that can benefit you.
  • Guide you in understanding the NDIS and support you in navigating it effectively.

A Psychosocial Recovery Coach supports individuals with a psychosocial disability to take more control of their lives and to manage the complex challenges of daily living. They help individuals recognise, reflect on, and take responsibility for their own recovery.

By providing both practical assistance and emotional support, NDIS Recovery Coaches empower participants to build resilience and achieve their personal goals. They work collaboratively with individuals, their families, carers, and other services to design and implement a recovery plan, and help coordinate other NDIS supports.

What is a Psychosocial disability?

Psychosocial disability refers to challenges that arise from mental health conditions, impacting a person's ability to function in daily life. It is not defined by a specific diagnosis but rather by the functional limitations and barriers an individual may experience due to their mental health issues.

How can a Psychosocial Recovery Coach help someone with a disability?

A Psychosocial Recovery Coach offers a range of services designed to support individuals with psychosocial disabilities, including:

  • Personalised Support: Tailoring their approach to meet the unique needs of each participant.
  • Goal Setting and Achievement: Assisting participants in setting realistic and achievable goals related to personal development, education, employment, and social participation.
  • Navigating Services: Helping participants understand and access various services and supports available through the NDIS and other community resources.
  • Building Skills: Empowering participants by developing skills for daily living, improving self-management, and fostering independence.
  • Emotional Support: Offering a compassionate and understanding presence to help cope with challenges and build resilience.
  • Advocacy: Acting as an advocate to ensure participants' voices are heard and their needs are met within the NDIS framework and broader community.

How is it different from a Support Coordinator?

A Support Coordinator’s main focus is capacity building and working with an individual to maximise the benefits of their NDIS plan. A Psychosocial Recovery Coach is specifically designed for individuals with a primary diagnosis of psychosocial disability. Recovery coaches offer a more hands-on approach, utilising their specific knowledge of mental health services to ensure individuals receive the best support to reach their goals.

Where is a Psychosocial Recovery Coach in my NDIS plan?

If you are eligible for support from a Psychosocial Recovery Coach, this will be included in your NDIS plan under the category of "Capacity Building Supports." Specifically, you will find it under the "Improved Daily Living" budget. This allocation is designed to enhance your ability to manage your life, increase your independence, and achieve your goals through tailored support and coaching.

Extremely helpful in connecting us with an OT and speech therapist after we had rung countless providers and ended up on so many waitlists. Such a relief to finally get support, highly recommend

I went onto the website and put in my information, within two minutes I had a phone call. I spoke to Ellen who was absolutely lovely and did a fantastic job explaining everything I needed to know and making me feel calm in a situation I've never had to navigate before. Definitely recommend this company (and the happy Ellen) to any parent/person who's looking for help in a plan manager.
