An Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment is a detailed evaluation by qualified health professionals to understand how a person communicates, interacts with others, processes sensory information and approaches everyday routines. It usually involves interviews about development and history, questionnaires, observation and standardised tools, and may include input from family members, teachers or other supports. An assessment can confirm whether autism is present, give a clearer picture of strengths and support needs, and recommend practical next steps. Assessments are carried out by qualified health professionals, such as psychologists, paediatricians and psychiatrists. Some assessments involve a team, which may include a speech pathologist or occupational therapist, particularly for young children.

An autism assessment is a comprehensive evaluation to understand whether a person meets the criteria for autism spectrum disorder. It looks at social communication, interaction, sensory experiences, interests and routines, and how these affect daily life. In Australia, assessments generally follow the National Guideline for the Assessment and Diagnosis of Autism.
Medicare rebates may be available for some appointments with a GP referral. Additional rebates may apply for eligible people under 25 who are referred by a paediatrician or psychiatrist. Some private health insurance extras policies cover part of the cost of psychology appointments. Check with Medicare, your insurer and the provider before booking.
The NDIS generally doesn't fund diagnostic assessments, because diagnosis is the responsibility of the health system. However, a diagnosis and assessment report can be important evidence if you later apply for the NDIS.
Yes. Many people are assessed as adults, particularly if signs were missed or misunderstood in childhood. An adult assessment can help you better understand yourself, connect with the right supports and request adjustments at work or study.
Some parts of an assessment, such as interviews and feedback sessions, can often be done via telehealth. Observation and standardised testing may need to happen in person, especially for young children. Ask the provider how they run their assessments.

Your clinician will explain the findings and give you a report with recommendations. These may include speech therapy, occupational therapy or psychology, strategies for home and school, and information about other supports. If you're eligible, the report can also support an NDIS application. Karista can help connect you with providers for the next steps.
