About
HandinHand Mental Health & Disability
Specialist multidisciplinary support. Evidence-informed practice. Quality you can trust.
HandinHand Mental Health & Disability is a registered NDIS Provider delivering specialist Allied Health and Positive Behaviour Support services nationally with a strong clinical base in Queensland. Supports also offered via telehealth where clinically appropriate.
We support children, young people and adults, including people with complex support needs, psychosocial disability, Autism, intellectual disability, mental health needs and behaviours of concern.
Our multidisciplinary team brings together Positive Behaviour Support, Psychology, Occupational Therapy and Social Work, allowing participants, families and support teams to access coordinated expertise through one trusted provider.
Specialists in complex needs
HIH is particularly experienced in supporting participants where needs are complex, multiple services are involved, or the way forward is not always straightforward.
Rather than looking at one diagnosis, behaviour or area of functioning in isolation, our practitioners consider the broader picture, the person, their environment, everyday functioning, relationships, communication, mental health, support network and goals.
Where appropriate, our multidisciplinary approach allows practitioners to collaborate across disciplines, helping develop a clearer understanding of a participant's needs and more coordinated recommendations.
For Support Coordinators and other referrers, this means you can come to HIH with the participant and their needs even when you are unsure which discipline may be the best place to start.
Our services
Positive Behaviour Support
Our Behaviour Support Practitioners bring strong sector expertise in supporting participants with behaviours of concern, complex support needs and restrictive practices. We work collaboratively with participants, families, Carer Support and support teams to understand not just what is happening, but the factors influencing behaviour and what needs to change within the person's environment and support network.
Refer to our Positive Behaviour Support team for:
• Functional Behaviour Assessments
• Interim and Comprehensive Behaviour Support Plans
• Behaviours of concern and complex presentations
• Restrictive practice reduction and elimination
• Capacity building with families, carers and support teams
• Practical behaviour strategies across home, community and other environments
• Support where disability, mental health, communication and environmental factors interact
• Training and implementation support for the participant's wider team
Our approach focuses on understanding the function of behaviour, building capacity and creating practical, sustainable support environments that promote participant choice, dignity, safety and quality of life.
Beyond participant services, our experienced practitioners contribute to sector capability through professional training, education, mentoring and knowledge sharing, helping strengthen the quality of Positive Behaviour Support practice across the wider sector.
Psychology
Our Psychology team supports participants when mental health, emotional regulation, behaviour or psychological needs are affecting everyday functioning, relationships, independence or participation.
Refer to our Psychology team for:
• Anxiety, depression and emotional wellbeing
• Emotional regulation and coping strategies
• Psychosocial disability and complex mental health needs
• Autism, ADHD and neurodevelopmental needs
• Behavioural and emotional concerns
• Building resilience, confidence and independence
• Relationships, communication and social participation
• Psychological intervention and capacity building
Our Psychologists understand the important intersection between disability, mental health and everyday functioning. Support is evidence-informed, individualised and focused on helping participants develop practical skills and strategies that can be applied in everyday life.
Occupational Therapy
Our Occupational therapists help identify what is getting in the way of a participant completing everyday activities safely, independently and meaningfully.
Refer to our Occupational Therapy team for:
• Daily living and self-care
• Independence at home and in the community
• Functional capacity and everyday functioning
• Sensory processing and regulation
• Routines, organisation and completing everyday tasks
• Community and social participation
• Assistive technology and equipment needs
• Environmental modifications and practical strategies
• Functional Capacity Assessments and recommendations
Our OTs consider the interaction between the person, their environment and the activities they need or want to do. We translate assessment findings into practical strategies and recommendations designed to strengthen independence, participation and everyday functioning.
Social Work
Our Social Workers are particularly valuable when a participant's needs are complex and social, family, psychosocial or environmental circumstances are creating barriers to wellbeing, independence or participation.
Refer to our Social Work team for:
• Complex psychosocial needs
• Capacity building and strengthening independence
• Advocacy and navigating services and systems
• Housing and accommodation-related needs
• Strengthening family and informal support networks
• Relationships and social participation
• Connecting with community and mainstream services
• Identifying and addressing barriers to accessing support
• Complex life circumstances requiring coordinated support
• NDIS-related assessments and reports within Social Work scope
Our Social Workers take a whole-of-person approach, looking beyond an individual issue to understand the broader circumstances affecting the participant. We work alongside participants, families and support networks to build capacity, navigate complexity and develop stronger, more sustainable supports.
Functional Capacity & Specialist Assessments
Good support starts with good evidence.
HIH provides comprehensive assessments and reports that build a clear picture of a participant's functioning, everyday challenges, strengths, support needs and areas where additional support may be required.
Refer to HIH for assessment when you need to better understand:
• How disability impacts everyday functioning
• Current functional capacity, strengths and support needs
• Barriers affecting independence and participation
• Daily living and community participation needs
• Gaps within current supports
• Assistive technology or environmental considerations
• The type and level of support a participant may require
• Practical recommendations aligned with goals
Quality is at the heart of all we do!
Quality is not an administrative exercise at HIH, it is embedded in how we deliver services.
Our practitioners are supported by experienced senior clinicians, supervisors and operational leaders, with internal quality assurance processes designed to promote consistency, accountability and high professional standards.
This commitment is particularly important when supporting people with complex needs, where decisions, recommendations and documentation can have significant impacts on the participant and their wider support network.
We continually invest in practitioner capability, professional development and systems that support safe, ethical and evidence informed practice.
More than a referral
We know that good outcomes rely on collaboration.
Our practitioners work alongside participants, families, Support Coordinators, Plan Managers, Support Workers, schools, health professionals and other members of the person's support network.
We value participant choice and control, clear communication and respectful collaboration. Our approach is to listen first, understand what is happening for the participant and work with the people around them to develop practical and sustainable supports.
For referrers, we aim to make the referral process straightforward and responsive. Our team can discuss the participant's needs, current priorities, location and funding and help identify the most appropriate service or practitioner.
